Results of Hong Kong's First Mental Health Survey of Music Performers Released: Over 60% Experiencing Depression or Anxiety

Music heals, bringing joy, inspiration, and connection to the public; however, the mental health of music performers has long been neglected and lacks proper care. The results of Hong Kong's first survey focusing on the mental health of music performers reveal that 62% of the surveyed performers reported experiencing depression or anxiety. Furthermore, 45% of musicians suffer from music performance anxiety, 35% have sleep disorders, and 30% have drinking problems. Moreover, the findings of this study indicate that while variations in these risk factors can lead to mental illness, they are not directly correlated with mental well-being outcomes. Conversely, protective factors such as psychological resilience and social support can significantly influence both mental illness and mental well-being. A total of 184 local music performers in Hong Kong participated in this questionnaire survey.

This survey aims to understand the mental health conditions of music performers in Hong Kong. It was led in July 2024 by a research team from the Master of Social Sciences in Nonprofit Management programme at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong. Ear Up Music actively participated as the supporting non-profit organisation (NPO) for this research. The study aims to investigate the mental health risk factors and protective mechanisms of Hong Kong music performers, and subsequently, based on actual data provided by the performers, explore effective and suitable support measures for local musicians.

In addition to collecting quantitative data, the study also conducted in-depth interviews with local mental health non-profit organisations in Hong Kong to explore effective solutions to help musicians improve their mental health. The research report recommends: to better improve the overall psychological state of performing musicians in Hong Kong, NPO interventions should prioritise enhancing protective factors and improving the accessibility, affordability, and applicability of intervention tools. This will further enhance the efficacy of the four existing NPO intervention models: telephone hotlines, preventive measures, therapy and counselling, and peer support.
